Background

Institutions of higher education continue to experience serious problems with respect to student alcohol and other drug abuse (AOD). For campus administrators, deciding how to effectively respond means understanding the complexity of these social problems, the individuality of their campus community, and the evidence-based strategies available. These complicated problems require a comprehensive and integrated response, and developing a prevention program requires a systematic planning and evaluation process.

This self-paced, online training will briefly describe the key steps involved in the strategic planning process, which include: 1) Conducting a problem analysis; 2) Establishing long-term goals and objectives; 3) Selecting evidence-based prevention strategies; 4) Creating a strategic plan; and 5) Executing an evaluation plan. While all steps in this process are important, this training will focus primarily on guiding participants through developing a strategic plan and selecting evidence-based strategies. Future Center trainings will provide more in-depth information about how to conduct a problem analysis and executing a plan to evaluate campus prevention efforts.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the online training, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss and implement the key steps in the strategic planning process.
  2. Select evidence-based alcohol and other drug abuse prevention strategies.
  3. Develop a strategic plan for their campus AOD prevention efforts.
  4. Access Higher Education Center products and services.
